Her path requires winning a Democratic nomination against a broad field, then carrying a closely divided general election.
- Modern open presidential contests rarely produce a House member as nominee; Obama is the main recent exception after winning a Senate seat.
- She must enter, build national coalition support, and win primaries beginning in early 2028, with party leaders and donors mattering heavily.
- A major Democratic backlash against establishment alternatives or an unusually strong progressive primary surge would raise the odds.

AOC must first win a Democratic primary against a deep establishment bench, then beat a GOP incumbent in a 2028 environment nobody can yet read.
- No sitting House member has won the presidency since James Garfield in 1880; the Senate or a governorship is the modern launchpad.
- She would likely face Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, and Andy Beshear in a 2028 primary where Super Tuesday states and donor networks favor governors.
- Her national favorability sits in the high 30s with intense GOP opposition, well below the ~50% floor usually needed to win a general election.

Ocasio-Cortez must first secure the Democratic nomination against mainstream moderates before winning swing states in November.
- Winning requires capturing the Democratic nomination first, where establishment figures and governors usually block left-wing rebels.
- Her national unfavorables and House-only legislative background create severe structural headwinds across decisive Rust Belt swing states.
- A massive progressive wave and an explicit endorsement from labor coalitions by early 2028 would be necessary to lift these odds.

She'd need to win a crowded Dem primary and a general election, both uncertain this early.
- AOC hasn't declared, faces potential Senate run or strong primary rivals like Newsom/Whitmer/Shapiro.
- Base rate for any single named politician winning a presidential election ~2 years out is very low, typically under 5%.
- Her national polling and swing-state viability lag establishment figures; a major shift in Dem primary dynamics would change this.

AOC must run, seize the Dem nomination from governors/VPs, then win the Electoral College.
- No sitting House member has won the presidency in over a century; Democrats nominate governors or VPs.
- She remains unannounced and her left-wing brand polls poorly in the Midwest and Sun Belt states needed.
- A 2026 midterm wipeout of other Democrats or a surprise primary collapse would be the only real mover.

She must clear both a primary and general election while being among the most polarizing figures in modern politics.
- No candidate this far from the median voter has won a modern general election; McGovern and Mondale lost in landslides from less extreme positions.
- She'd need to beat likely primary rivals (Newsom, Whitmer, Buttigieg, or others) who have broader coalition appeal and establishment backing.
- A Democratic loss in 2028 or a strong Republican economy would push the party toward a centrist nominee, further reducing her path.
