Andersson's path depends on the red-green bloc securing 175 Riksdag seats and reconciling the Center and Left parties.

    • The Social Democrat-led bloc has consistently led Tidö coalition parties by 4 to 8 points in national polling averages.
    • Forming a majority requires Center (C) and Left (V) toleration, which Andersson previously negotiated without breaking the coalition.
    • A right-bloc rebound or prolonged coalition deadlock that installs a compromise candidate would invalidate this outcome.

Outcome hinges on whether the Social Democrats and Andersson can form a governing bloc after the Sept 2026 election.

    • The election already occurred on Sept 13, 2026, so this now depends on actual coalition formation dynamics post-election.
    • Sweden's right-bloc coalition (Kristersson) has governed since 2022, and incumbency plus Sweden Democrats' support gives them an edge in a close race.
    • Polling trends in 2025-26 showed Social Democrats leading in some polls, but converting a plurality into an Andersson-led government requires viable coalition partners.

It turns on whether the Social Democrats can assemble enough parliamentary tolerance after the 13 September vote.

    • Andersson leads the largest opposition party, but Sweden’s PM is chosen through negative parliamentarism, not a direct election.
    • Ulf Kristersson took office after the 2022 election through a narrow Tidö-based bloc; coalition arithmetic can shift sharply by 2026.
    • A clear Social Democratic-led bloc or a Sweden Democrats split from the right would raise the odds most; a renewed right-wing majority would end them.

S+allies must secure a workable majority or Speakers' talks after the 13 Sep vote.

    • Norlén starts exploratory talks within days; a PM vote needs 175+ in the 349-seat Riksdag by early 2027.
    • S has been the modal largest party (base ~40% of post-war PMs) but 2022 right-bloc win and SD kingmaker role sit this case below that rate.
    • A clear left-green majority or Kristersson's bloc fracturing would flip the odds; a hung parliament lasting past June 2027 resolves Other.

Whether the Sept 13 bloc result lets Andersson assemble 175 seats, or hands the initiative to Kristersson or a non-Social Democrat.

    • Sweden's Riksdag has 349 seats; a PM needs 175, and the 2022 result gave the right bloc 176 to the left's 173, so this hinges on a handful of marginal seats.
    • If the left bloc wins, Andersson must still pass a confidence vote after the Speaker's four rounds of talks, typically concluding by October-November 2026.
    • Base rate for an opposition leader returning as PM after one term out is modest; the 2026 polls show a tight race, so I put this below a coin flip but well above the…

Andersson's return depends on the Social Democrats winning a governing majority or coalition deal after the Sept 13, 2026 election.

    • The Sept 13, 2026 election has already occurred; current reporting suggests the right-wing bloc (SD, Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals) retained or won a…
    • Andersson would need the Social Democrats to lead a viable coalition or the right bloc to collapse; historically Swedish PMs rarely return after losing an election…
    • A development that would shift this: a post-election crisis fracturing the right-wing bloc and forcing new negotiations where Andersson emerges as a compromise candidate.
