Russian forces must overcome dense Donbas urban defenses after Chasiv Yar to fully clear Kostyantynivka in eight months.
- Kostyantynivka is a major logistics hub behind Chasiv Yar, meaning Russian advances at 2024 rates face heavy attrition before entry.
- Capturing similar cities like Bakhmut and Avdiivka took 9 to 12 months once directly assaulted, making June 2027 a tight deadline.
- A catastrophic Ukrainian defensive collapse along the H-20 axis would accelerate this, but current positional warfare makes it lean No.

Hinges on whether Russian forces can complete urban encirclement/capture of a heavily fortified city within 20 months.
- Kostyantynivka is part of Ukraine's 'fortress belt' with extensive defenses, slowing Russian advances significantly compared to open terrain.
- Russian forces have been grinding toward it for over a year with incremental gains, suggesting slow attritional pace rather than rapid collapse.
- A 20-month window gives substantial time for continued Russian pressure, but urban capture often stalls or takes far longer than anticipated (cf. Bakhmut, Avdiivka).

This hinges on whether Russia can convert pressure east of the city into a sustained urban encirclement before summer 2027.
- Russia must advance through the Kramatorsk–Kostyantynivka defensive belt and occupy every mapped municipal fragment by June 30.
- Large defended Ukrainian cities have usually taken months or remained unconquered; full-map capture sets a stricter bar than reaching outskirts.
- A collapse of Ukraine’s Chasiv Yar/Toretsk-linked defenses or a major manpower shock would materially raise the odds.

Russia must finish clearing a fortified city of ~10k pre-war population in under 9 months of fighting.
- Russia took Avdiivka in Feb 2024 after ~4 months of intense assault, but Kostyantynivka is a larger, more fortified urban area.
- ISW shows Russian forces still several km from the city center as of late 2026, with Ukrainian defenses along the Toretsk-Kostyantynivka axis holding.
- Full municipal capture requires clearing all urban terrain, which historically takes Russia 6-12 months per city of this size; the 9-month window is tight but not…

Russia must close ~15-20 km of fortified ground and then win urban combat, all within ~8.5 months.
- Russian advance rate in Donetsk has been 1-3 km/month in active sectors; reaching Kostyantynivka's outskirts alone likely consumes 5-7 months.
- Urban capture precedent (Bakhmut ~10 months, Avdiivka ~4 months of final assault) means even reaching the city doesn't guarantee quick capture.
- A Ukrainian defensive collapse or Russian operational breakthrough would be the main scenario pushing this above 50%, but no such collapse has materialized in Donetsk…

Whether Russia can clear remaining urban/municipal ground around Kostyantynivka in 8.5 months of attritional Donbas fighting.
- Russian 2024-26 Donetsk advances average 1-4 km/month; city fights (Bakhmut, Avdiivka) add 3-6 months of house-to-house delay.
- ISW needs the whole municipality shaded, not just the city core; Ukrainian prepared defenses and Russian manpower limits keep this below historical city-fall rates.
- A Ukrainian front collapse or Russian operational envelopment would flip the odds; the current grinding pattern does not indicate that.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the entirety of Kostyantynivka, Donetsk Oblast, (48.528896° N, 37.702514° E) between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Kostyantynivka will be considered captured if the entirety of the municipality is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. The boundaries of the municipality are those shown under the “Ukrainian Settlements” layer on the ISW map. If all area within the municipality is shaded under a qualifying layer, however, the shading does not precisely match up with the border such that there is a tiny amount of unshaded area along the border of the municipality, this will still qualify for a "Yes" resolution. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading under the following layers will qua
