It turns on whether the Republican can overcome Michigan’s recent Democratic federal-election edge in a close midterm race.

    • Michigan backed Democratic Senate candidates in 2018 and 2024, but statewide margins have been competitive and governorship control is split.
    • The GOP nominee needs a plurality on November 3; Michigan has no Senate runoff, so turnout and ticket-splitting decide it immediately.
    • A credible late poll average showing a sustained Republican lead of 3+ points would materially raise the estimate.

Midterm headwinds under a Republican presidency will heavily penalize the GOP nominee in a perennially purple battleground.

    • Incumbent-party midterms historically penalize the White House party by 3 to 6 points, severely hindering GOP margins in Michigan.
    • Democrats have held this seat since 1994, relying on proven statewide mobilization infrastructure in Wayne and Oakland counties.
    • A fractured or low-turnout Democratic base alongside an unusually popular GOP nominee is the only path that pushes this over 50%.

Midterm dynamics under a Trump presidency and Michigan's slight blue lean favor Slotkin, but it's a competitive open seat.

    • Midterms historically punish the president's party; Trump holding the White House in 2026 creates a structural headwind for Rogers.
    • Michigan has voted Democratic for Senate in every cycle since 2014 and Slotkin has proven statewide appeal with her 2024 House win.
    • Rogers' decade out of office and the race polling as a lean-Dem toss-up put this below the base rate for GOP pickup opportunities.

Michigan Senate 2026 is a toss-up open seat race; polling and midterm environment matter most.

    • Michigan is a swing state but has leaned Democratic in recent federal races, with Peters winning 2020 and Stabenow long dominant.
    • Open seat due to Peters retirement creates genuine competitiveness, and 2026 midterms under a Republican president historically favor the opposition party.
    • Late-cycle polling and fundraising by late October 2026 would be the key signal; without specifics, this sits near a competitive toss-up slightly favoring Dems.

GOP needs a late polling surge plus high-turnout rural/suburban overperformance in a D+2 state six days out.

    • Incumbent Gary Peters (D) is the nominee and has won two close races; no 2026 polling as of 29 Oct shows a GOP lead.
    • Michigan last elected a GOP senator in 1994; even 2018/2022 midterm environments produced Dem Senate holds.
    • A Trump 2024 win would make 2026 a classic opposition midterm, but MI’s 2020/2022 presidential and gubernatorial margins still favor Democrats.

Michigan's Senate seat is open with no incumbent, and the GOP has not won a Michigan Senate race since 1994.

    • Democrats have held this seat since 2001 (Stabenow, then Slotkin in 2024), and Michigan has elected only Democratic senators for three decades.
    • The 2026 midterm environment is expected to favor Democrats nationally, and Michigan's 2024 presidential result was decided by roughly 1.4 points.
    • The single development that would most change my mind is a credible Republican nominee paired with a late-breaking national GOP wave, but no such polling shift is…

Resolution criteria

This market will resolve according to the winner of the 2026 midterm Michigan U.S. Senate election, inclusive of any run-offs. A candidate shall be considered to represent a party in the event that he or she is the nominee of the party in question. Candidates other than the Democratic or Republican nominee (e.g., Greens, Libertarian, independent) may be added at a later date. Candidates who run as independents will not be encompassed by the “Democrat” or “Republican” options regardless of any affiliation they may have with the party. The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party. The resolution source for this market is the Associated Press, Fox News, and NBC. This market will resolve once all three sources call the race for the same candidate. If all three sources haven’t called the race in this state for the same candidate, this market will resolve based on the official certification.
