It turns on whether September data force a renewed tightening case before the October 27–28 decision.

    • The FOMC alone can act, with one scheduled meeting on October 27–28 and little time for a policy reversal.
    • Outside emergency episodes, consecutive late-cycle hikes after a pause are uncommon; 25 bp is the standard increment if it hikes.
    • I would raise this sharply if September CPI and payrolls reaccelerate and Fed speakers pivot explicitly toward further restraint.

A 25bp hike requires a clear inflation reacceleration that forces the FOMC off its 2026 easing/hold path.

    • The Oct 27-28 2026 FOMC must vote to raise the upper bound; that needs two consecutive hot CPI/PCE prints plus a hawkish SEP update by then.
    • Outside hiking cycles the historical frequency of a 25bp hike at any given meeting is ~8%; 2026 sits below that unless data break.
    • A September CPI surprise above 3.5% core would be the single development that most raises the odds.

The Fed is almost certainly in a cutting or holding cycle by late 2026, not hiking.

    • The Fed cut to 4.25-4.50% by end of 2024 and markets have been pricing further easing through 2025-26, not tightening.
    • A 25 bps hike in Oct 2026 would require a dramatic reacceleration in inflation or a policy error reversal—neither is in current data or projections.
    • The Fed has not hiked after a sustained cutting cycle without a multi-quarter inflation shock; no such shock is visible on the horizon.

A late-2026 rate hike requires an abrupt resurgence in inflation that overcomes the Fed's prevailing easing bias.

    • The FOMC is positioned in an easing or neutral holding pattern, making an isolated 25 bps hike highly improbable by late 2026.
    • Historically, hiking cycles require multiple consecutive quarters of accelerating core PCE above 3%, which is not in baseline data.
    • A sharp energy shock or severe tariff-driven price spike before October 28 would be the only trigger to prompt an emergency hike.

  • DeepSeekDeepSeek

A 25bp hike in October 2026 requires inflation to re-accelerate hard enough to override a Fed already in cutting mode.

    • The Fed's 2025 dot plot and recent cuts put the funds rate on a downward path, so a hike needs a genuine regime break, not just sticky CPI.
    • The FOMC meets Oct 27-28, 2026; between now and then only three CPI prints and two jobs reports land, too few to force a reversal.
    • Base rate for a hike after a cutting cycle within 12 months is very low; the 1994-95 and 2015-18 precedents took years of tightening, not a single meeting.

Fed is on a cutting path through 2026 amid cooling inflation/labor market; a hike is very unlikely.

    • Current Fed trajectory in 2025-2026 has been toward cuts, not hikes, as inflation moderates and labor market softens.
    • A rate hike would require a sharp unexpected inflation resurgence or major shock, which is not the base case within this narrow window.
    • Base rate for hikes in any single FOMC meeting during an easing cycle is very low, historically well under 5%.

Resolution criteria

The FED interest rates are defined in this market by the upper bound of the target federal funds range. The decisions on the target federal funds range are made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings. This market will resolve to the amount of basis points the upper bound of the target federal funds rate is changed by versus the level it was prior to the Federal Reserve's October 2026 meeting. If the target federal funds rate is changed to a level not expressed in the displayed options, the change will be rounded up to the nearest 25 and will resolve to the relevant bracket. (e.g. if there's a cut/increase of 12.5 bps it will be considered to be 25 bps) The resolution source for this market is the FOMC’s statement after its meeting scheduled for October 27-28, 2026 according to the official calendar: https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm. The level and change of the target federal funds rate is also published at the official website of the Federal Reserve at https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/openmarket.htm. This market may resolve as soon as the FOMC’s statement for their October meeting with relevant data is issued. If no sta
