▲ MARKETS & ECONOMY 3 MONTHS HORIZON RESOLVES 28 OCT 2026 · 3d ago

The Federal Reserve leaves interest rates unchanged at its October 2026 meeting.

The FOMC meets in late October 2026. This resolves if the upper bound of the target federal funds rate remains unchanged from its previous level.

Across 6 frontier models answering independently, the panel is barely on the yes side: the median is 60%.

They do not agree: GPT puts it at 71% and Claude at 15%, 56 points apart. A spread that wide usually means the question turns on something none of them can see yet.

Money disagrees. The market sits at 95%, so the models are 35 points less confident than people with cash on the outcome — one of the wider gaps in the archive.

Nothing is settled until 28 Oct 2026, when the outcome is checked against sources and every number above gets a permanent score.

With only about six weeks between 15 September and the late-October meeting, the default FOMC outcome is a hold: in recent cycles, unchanged decisions have been more common than moves at any individual meeting.

    • A September decision and the intervening CPI, payrolls, PCE, and financial-conditions data will largely set the October baseline.
    • The key exception is a material inflation or labor-market surprise forcing a consecutive adjustment; a clear September move accompanied by revised projections would lower the hold odds most.

The Fed has historically paused at roughly 60-70% of meetings over the past two decades, and pausing is the modal outcome at any given meeting.

    • By October 2026, the easing cycle that began in late 2024 will likely have brought rates closer to neutral, reducing urgency to move further.
    • The FOMC tends to cluster cuts in consecutive meetings when cutting, but also takes extended pauses between adjustment phases.
    • If inflation remains sticky above 2% or the labor market holds up, a pause becomes the path of least resistance.
    • A sharp deterioration in employment data or a financial shock would push this toward a cut, but the base rate of inaction at any single meeting is high.

Six weeks out, the October FOMC is already fully priced by the September SEP and the 17 Sep meeting; Powell’s post-meeting language plus the two remaining CPI/PCE prints decide whether a 25 bp move is teed up.

    • Holds occur at ~55-65 % of meetings once the funds rate is inside a 100 bp corridor of the estimated r-star (current 4.25-4.50 % range).
    • A hold sits modestly above that base because the Committee has already delivered most of the 2025-26 easing and the next scheduled meeting is only six weeks later, so they can wait.
    • The single development that would flip the call is a September CPI print >0.4 % m/m core that forces an emergency 25 bp hike at the 28-29 Oct gathering.

By autumn 2026, the Fed's easing cycle is likely mature or near its neutral terminal rate, raising the baseline frequency of pauses.

    • Historical FOMC behavior shows an unconditional pause rate around 55-65% across all meetings, which spikes during consolidation phases between quarterly projection releases.
    • Because October meetings do not include a Summary of Economic Projections, policymakers prefer deferring rate moves to September or December unless macroeconomic conditions deteriorate sharply.
    • The primary risk that would trigger a move is an abrupt spike in unemployment past 4.5% during September-October data releases.

The FOMC's September 2026 meeting is the key precursor: if the committee cuts or hikes there, the October meeting typically holds, making 'unchanged' the modal outcome.

    • Historically, roughly 70-80% of individual FOMC meetings result in no change, but that base rate is inflated by long hold regimes; in an active easing or tightening cycle, consecutive moves are common.
    • With the fed funds upper bound currently in the mid-4s and inflation trending toward target, the committee is likely near the end of any cutting cycle, which raises the odds of a pause.
    • The single development that would most change this is a September CPI or jobs report that forces a 50bp move in September, making an October fo…

The Fed has been on an easing path through 2025 with cuts in September and expected in October/December 2025, and market pricing throughout 2026 has generally leaned toward continued gradual easing as inflation cools toward target and labor market softens.

    • By October 2026, after roughly a year of cuts, the base rate favors another 25bp cut at most FOMC meetings during active easing cycles rather than a pause, especially if unemployment remains elevated.
    • Historically, once the Fed begins a cutting cycle, holds are less common than cuts until the terminal rate is reached.
    • Absent inflation resurgence or hawkish data surprises between now and October 2026, a cut is more likely than a hold, makin…

Resolution criteria

The FED interest rates are defined in this market by the upper bound of the target federal funds range. The decisions on the target federal funds range are made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings. This market will resolve to the amount of basis points the upper bound of the target federal funds rate is changed by versus the level it was prior to the Federal Reserve's October 2026 meeting. If the target federal funds rate is changed to a level not expressed in the displayed options, the change will be rounded up to the nearest 25 and will resolve to the relevant bracket. (e.g. if there's a cut/increase of 12.5 bps it will be considered to be 25 bps) The resolution source for this market is the FOMC’s statement after its meeting scheduled for October 27-28, 2026 according to the official calendar: https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm. The level and change of the target federal funds rate is also published at the official website of the Federal Reserve at https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/openmarket.htm. This market may resolve as soon as the FOMC’s statement for their October meeting with relevant data is issued. If no sta
