Sloviansk sits ~15 km from the current front; Russia must crack a prepared defense in ~3 months.
- Russian forces are currently ~15 km from Sloviansk's outskirts near Lyman; they've advanced ~1-2 km/day at best in this sector, meaning weeks of grinding alone to reach…
- Sloviansk is a heavily fortified urban area with the Siverskyi Donets river as a natural barrier; urban capture historically takes months (Bakhmut: 10 months, Mariupol…
- Russia would need to first take Lyman or bypass it, cross the river, then breach urban defenses—all before Dec 31—making this possible but unlikely in the remaining ~100…

Hinges on whether Russia's grinding advance toward Sloviansk breaches the city's outskirts before year-end 2026.
- Russian forces have been pushing toward Sloviansk from the south/east for over a year but the city itself remains a heavily defended fortress with no confirmed…
- Historical pace of Russian advances near fortified Donbas cities (Bakhmut, Avdiivka) shows months of grinding before actual entry, and Sloviansk defenses are deep and…
- A sudden Russian breakthrough or Ukrainian collapse in nearby Kramatorsk/Sloviansk axis within the ~3 month window would be the main thing that changes this.

Russians must reach Sloviansk city limits from a still-distant front in ~100 days.
- ISW maps as of Sept 2026 still show the line well south/east of Kramatorsk-Sloviansk; grinding 2024-26 rates take villages, not fortress cities, in a quarter.
- Ukrainian defenses and logistics around Sloviansk have not collapsed; a sudden operational breakthrough would be required and has no recent precedent.
- Persistent ISW shading of even one city block is the bar; weather, manpower, and Ukrainian reserves make that unlikely before 31 Dec.

Russia would need a rapid breakthrough through the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk defensive belt before year-end.
- Only about 99 days remain, while Russian advances in Donetsk have generally been measured in kilometers over months.
- Russia must first break Ukrainian lines west and north of its current approaches, then reach the city boundary ISW maps as controlled.
- Odds would rise sharply if ISW shows a sustained Russian penetration toward Kramatorsk or Sloviansk by November.

Russia must cross ~20km of fortified Donbas terrain and enter a city of ~100k in the next 14 weeks.
- Russian advances near Sloviansk have been measured in hundreds of meters per month; reaching the city limits requires taking Kostiantynivka and multiple fortified belts…
- ISW's own 2026 assessments put Russian forces still fighting for Kostiantynivka and Chasiv Yar, with Sloviansk not yet in artillery-range contact of the city core.
- Base rate for a major Donbas fortress city falling within a 3-month window after years of grinding is very low; Sloviansk has been fortified since 2014 and is a key…

Russian forces cannot cross over 20km of fortified Donbas territory and take Chasiv Yar or Siversk in just three months.
- From late September to end-December 2026 is only 99 days, far too fast for Russia's grinding average advance of meters per day.
- Russia must collapse major defensive lines at Chasiv Yar, Kostyantynivka, or Siversk before physically touching Sloviansk city bounds.
- A catastrophic systemic collapse of Ukrainian front lines across northern Donetsk within weeks would be required to shift these odds.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures any territory of Sloviansk (48.853751256046095° N, 37.60508085394494° E; https://maps.app.goo.gl/Kx9MMw32sFDPUt8f9) by December 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. Territory will be considered captured if any part of the city or settlement is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine", “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hours” will qualify. Once a qualifying condition is met, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If Russia comes into control of the specifi
