Russian forces enter the city of Dobropillia by December 31, 2026.
Follows the frontline in eastern Ukraine, resolving Yes if the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) maps Russian control into Dobropillia.
Across 6 frontier models answering independently, the panel thinks this is unlikely: the median is 17%.
They do not agree: Claude puts it at 42% and Gemini at 4%, 38 points apart. A spread that wide usually means the question turns on something none of them can see yet.
Money disagrees. The market sits at 96%, so the models are 79 points less confident than people with cash on the outcome — one of the wider gaps in the archive.
Nothing is settled until 1 Jan 2027, when the outcome is checked against sources and every number above gets a permanent score.

Depends on whether Russian forces can close the Dobropillia salient before winter conditions and Ukrainian reinforcement stall it.
- Russian forces have been probing/infiltrating near Dobropillia since mid-2025, with slow but persistent gains around Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad axis feeding into this front.
- Ukraine has committed significant reinforcements and counterattacks in this pocket, showing capacity to contest and even claw back ground, which slows the timeline.
- Base rate for capturing a specific named town within 3 months in this grinding war is moderate-to-low, but Dobropillia sits directly on an active contested salient…

Whether RU can push any assessed control into Dobropillia itself in ~100 days.
- ISW must shade even a sliver of the named settlement (48.47N 37.08E) Russian-controlled by 31 Dec 2026 23:59 ET.
- Autumn rasputitsa plus typical Donbas tempo (tens of metres/day, months per town) put a fresh urban entry well below the 2024-25 capture rate.
- A Pokrovsk-axis collapse or confirmed RU presence in adjacent Sviatohorivka/Hannivka would raise the odds sharply.

Russia must cross ~10km of fortified Donetsk line and enter a town ISW still maps as Ukrainian-held before New Year.
- ISW's own assessment as of late 2026 places Dobropillia well behind the front, with Russian advances in Donetsk running at roughly 1-3 km/month in this sector.
- Russia would need to clear the Novopavlivka-Kurakhove axis and the Vovcha river line first, which has absorbed most of its 2026 effort without reaching Dobropillia's…
- Base rate for a town 10+ km from the line falling within a single quarter is low; the one thing that would flip this is a Ukrainian collapse in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad…

Dobropillia sits ~25 km behind the current front; Russia would need a breakthrough and sustained exploitation in ~100 days.
- Dobropillia is roughly 25 km west of the current Pokrovsk-axis frontline as of late September 2026, requiring a multi-layer breakthrough.
- Russian advances in 2025-26 have averaged 1-3 km/month on this axis even in favorable sectors; 25 km in 3 months demands a collapse.
- A Ukrainian defensive collapse or major encirclement near Pokrovsk would be the key development shifting this above 30%.

Russia would need a rapid, sustained breakthrough west of the Donetsk front before winter limits operations.
- Dobropillia lies roughly 20–30 km behind the contested Pokrovsk-sector approaches, beyond several Ukrainian defensive lines.
- Three months is short: Russian gains in 2024–26 have usually been incremental, not city-reaching operational breakthroughs.
- I would raise this sharply if ISW maps a Russian advance past Sviatohorivka or Hannivka by mid-November.

Dobropillia sits over twenty kilometers behind Pokrovsk, requiring a total frontline collapse to reach within three months.
- Russian advances in the Pokrovsk sector average under a few kilometers per month and face entrenched Ukrainian defense lines.
- Russia must fully capture Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad before mounting an operational push northwest toward Dobropillia.
- A rapid mechanized breakthrough across open terrain in late autumn would be required, which current drone attrition prevents.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures any territory of Dopropillia (48.46978658204883° N, 37.08593384222816° E; https://maps.app.goo.gl/vipjg3UsWpqRnhM6A) by December 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. This market refers to the city of Dobropillia (48.47, 37.08) which borders Sviatohorivka and Hannivka. Other Ukrainian towns/cities named Dobropillia will not be considered for resolution. Territory will be considered captured if any part of the city or settlement is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine", “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hour
