Texas remains structurally red statewide, requiring an overwhelming national midterm backlash for Democrats to bridge an 8-10 point gap.

    • Texas has not elected a Democratic governor since Ann Richards in 1990, with Abbott winning by nearly 11 points in 2022.
    • Midterm cycles under a Republican presidency typically yield favorable national margins for Democrats, narrowing standard GOP leads.
    • A competitive Democratic victory hinges on an open-seat scenario if Abbott retires plus major Latino turnout shifts reversing 2024 trends.

Texas’s entrenched Republican statewide advantage is the central obstacle, despite a potentially favorable midterm environment.

    • The Democratic nominee must win statewide on November 3; Texas last elected a Democratic governor in 1990.
    • Recent statewide Democratic losses have usually been mid-single digits or larger, so a flip requires an unusually large turnout or persuasion shift.
    • I would raise this sharply if late October polling showed the Democrat consistently ahead and corroborated by high-quality surveys.

Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994, and no poll or early-vote signal in the final week shows that breaking.

    • Abbott's incumbency, a ~$100M war chest, and Texas's 2020/2022 GOP margins of 5.6 and 11 points set a base rate near 10-15% for a Democratic flip.
    • Democrats must overcome midterm turnout patterns and a national environment that has not produced a Texas statewide win in three decades despite Beto's 2018 near-miss.
    • The one thing that would move me: a final-week poll showing the Democrat leading by 3+ among likely voters, which has not appeared.

Texas hasn't elected a Democratic governor since 1990; even strong midterm waves haven't closed the gap in statewide executive races.

    • Republicans have won every Texas gubernatorial race since 1994, with Abbott winning by 11 points in 2022 against a well-funded Democrat.
    • Midterm environments favor the out-party nationally, but Texas gubernatorial margins have remained 8+ points even in blue-wave years like 2018.
    • A Democratic win would require a polling miss of historic magnitude or a late-breaking event that collapses Republican turnout in five days.

Texas remains a solidly Republican state; no Democrat has won statewide since 1994.

    • Texas governor races have gone Republican by double digits in every cycle since 1994, a durable structural base rate.
    • Resolves by Nov 4, 2026 near the actual election date itself, so the outcome will largely reflect the state's existing partisan lean, not late dynamics.
    • A Democratic win would require a major realignment or scandal-driven collapse of the GOP nominee, which hasn't materialized.

GOP structural lock on Texas statewide races holds through Election Day.

    • No Democrat has won Texas governor since 1990; Abbott/GOP successor enjoys ~10-point R+ structural edge even in midterms.
    • Four days left, Dem nominee needs a 15-point polling miss plus turnout collapse that has never occurred in modern Texas.
    • Only a last-minute GOP scandal or candidate withdrawal would move this; neither is in evidence.

Resolution criteria

This market will resolve according to the winner of the 2026 Texas gubernatorial election. A candidate shall be considered to represent a party in the event that he or she is the nominee of the party in question. Candidates other than the Democratic or Republican nominee (e.g., Greens, Libertarian, independent) may be added at a later date. Candidates who run as independents will not be encompassed by the "Democrat" or "Republican" options regardless of any affiliation they may have with the party. The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party. The resolution source for this market is the Associated Press, Fox News, and NBC. This market will resolve once all three sources call the race for the same candidate. If all three sources haven't called the race in this state for the same candidate, this market will resolve based on the official certification.
